Super Mario RPG hits Virtual Console

In a surprise move, SNES classic Super Mario RPG has tonight been released on the EU Virtual Console.

The Square-Enix/Nintendo collaboration is heralded as an absolute classic, and we rated it one of the top games never released in Europe. It’s been 12 years in the waiting, but finally, the game has been released as part of the ‘Hanabi Festival’ – the special seasons where games previously unreleased in Europe hit the Wii’s download service. The title is 900 points.

Also up as part of the update is Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels – you might remember this had a temporary release as part of the first Hanabi Festival, but is now on the store permanently. Why it was a special edition in the first place, on a download service, is anybody’s guess.

And now, the wait begins for Earthbound.

Nice one! I’ve just finished work for a fortnight and was looking for a classic to sink my teeth into. This will do quite nicely.

Aero, it’s a Hanabi Festival title so it’s 100 points more than a standard SNES title.

As for Earthbound, we’ll probably have to wait for Hanabi Festival 4. They’ve already announced the games for Hanabi 3 as being Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa, Dig Dug, Spelunker and DoReMi Fantasy: Milon’s DokiDoki Adventure.
