Peter Molyneux of Lionhead Studios [Black and White, Fable] claimed this week that the easy money exploit in Fable II Pub Games was intentional, and people who used it could see consequences in Fable II itself when it is released next month.
The downloadable title “Pub Games” allows players to earn gold that can be transfered to characters in the main game Fable II – and it’s these betting games that contained an easy exploit where the game would think you made a bet ten times more than you actually did, so getting gold was as simple as finding sand on a beach.
Molyneux said that players who used this exploit (providing they make the transfer from Pub Games to Fable II itself) will be in for a surprise, and another member of the studio stated that there “could be repercussions.”
Now, I don’t mean to be a cynic (wait, that’s a lie, I totally do), but there’s a few things that seem slightly odd about this. First, it was announced that they were patching the exploit out. If it wasn’t a glitch in the first place, why bother? To keep up the illusion that it’s a glitch? Then why even announce repercussions?! Surely, if you were to patch it out, it’s smart to pretend it’s a bug up until release when you go “aha! gotcha!” – or inversely, they could not release a patch at all, and players would know it’s up to them if they do want to take this more evil slant. Besides, the transfer between the two games is optional, and why do it if you knew it could affect your character, and don’t feel like being evil?
I suppose as the exploit is so simple, it’d be a shock how it got past Microsoft’s six years of certification. But hey, Castle Crashers did too, stranger things have happened…
It’s most likely that this was a deliberate move, but if you ask me, this story seems a bit off… let us know what you think in the comments – a moral trick, or an attempt to get out of an embarrassing mistake?

I haven’t used the glitch (I guess I can’t now if it’s been patched) and I have to say making money in that game is damn hard. But still, I heartily anticipate the message board topics of how some guy booted up Fable 2 and had a high-level monster kill and loot his guy in the first town.
Make it happen, Pete!
It’s too easy to perform by accident to have been intentional. Both me and my brother have managed to activate the glitch a number of times by total mistake (sometimes in reverse, causing us to bet less money than we should have). So I’m going to be rather annoyed if I have to suffer because of something this stupid.
But I definitely think there should be some sort of reprucsusion for those who have used it to gain a crazy amount of money. I only have 12,000 gold, I think it’s obvious enough I didn’t cheat to get that, but if all that time amassing those exclusive items now goes to waste.. I’ll be sending some very angry emails to Molyneux.
Im pretty sure that they re trying to make us believe that it was intentional is because there afraid that many people will get turned off from fable 2 because of all the bugs. The game would have already have been release had it not been for the thousands of bugs that they had to fix in the last month. The biggest being the online co op feature that wont release wit the game. They re afraid that people might think that theres things wrong with every aspect of this game so rather then say our bad and just fix the problem, they re fixing it and making up some dumb consequence so they can pretend it was intentional.
Well I can’t wait for this game its going to be great, I always read about the glitches before I actually do them, so I think i got lucky there because i dont want to be robbed, by the way that is a rumour going around on the internet. If anyone has xboxlive my gamertag is Blazingjonny
well I am personally waiting for Fallout 3 .. Looking at the screenshots I think it has a ton more atmosphere then Fable 2. I think we’ve all seen so many RPGs by now which all use the power of GPU’s to show nice lensflares and other light effects to show the effect of magic spells. Really, look at the Fallout 3 screenshots and tell me that does not look real, like an A-bomb just hit the planet and all we got is wasteland. get ready for a real experience boys and girls … forget about the Peter Molyneux hype that is Fable !!
