Left: Image as adjusted by Nintendo | Right: Original screenshot
A batch of around 70 screenshots, some old, some new, were released yesterday of the upcoming Wii game from Nintendo, Disaster: Day of Crisis. However, it appears that some of these have been edited by Nintendo before release, specifically lowering the lightness, desaturating the image, and changing the image to a brown hue – giving a darker, grittier look to the screenshots, more in line with the colour schemes of games seen on 360 and PS3.
All of the recent screenshots distributed by Nintendo UK have been in .psd, the file format of Photoshop: meaning that for the black and white looking screenshots, the adjustment layer can be turned off: revealing the original screenshot, actually featuring colour and the ability to see anything except large contrasts. The adjustment affects the whole screenshot, so you can tell if the healthbar in a screenshot is grey instead of green, it’s likely that it was one of the modified images.
Nintendo have not yet responded to a request for comment on this issue. The reason for this could be just an accident, it is not something across the whole collection of screenshots, and as the onscreen text and name of the adjustment layer of the files are in Japanese, it is possible that this is something done by the development team or Nintendo in Japan. However, the changing of colour does give the screenshots a different tone, and gives a different impression to the game. We’ll update you if we get a response.

If you’re interested, the Japanese text reads: 色相・彩度1 which is literally translated to “Hue Chroma 1″.
Initially I thought the game may have a feature to fade into grey when you’re in smoke too long. That still may be the case and these screens try to mimic this feature. But then why not just take screens of the said feature in the first place? Highly confusing.
i don under stand.
Sony enhances their screenshots everytime they post some on their blog. Dessaturation is nothing.
And it wouldn’t effect the healthbar, unless it was some really silly coding.
Gladman: There’s a significant difference between the images, not a minor touchup.
And it’s silly how they released the screenshots with the change as a layer that can be turned off.
And for the record, the full effects are a colourization to orange (Hue 40), saturation 10, lightness -60.
Sorry for the double post, but I just realised that other assets from the NoE press page also have this more ‘grey’ effect. See the Supporting Artwork section and see the original, 2006 artwork which was distributed with Disaster Day of Crisis information when it was first announced. Notice all the blacks and the dark tones. Now look at the bottom section, scroll across a few panes. It’s the same artwork, different pose by the main character (now helping someone escape). Notice how it’s now more beige then black. I get the feeling from this that it’s probably more of an artistic movement than anything else. How disappointing.
On art and things, it’s really don’t that important – it’s nice to set a tone, but really, that major a change to screenshots is just misleading.
Wow. The edited versions make the game look really bad to me. I mean, I know Gears and War is short of colours but these are literally black and grey.
Disaster: Day of Crisis set to be released on October 24th in Europe!

Suppose they figured more people would buy it if it had more “next gen” colouring.
I have the advantage of liking both screenshots anyway.
Okay, now what does that mean in English? Seriously, you’ve just shown us two identical pictures one which is in colour and the other which is in black and white, yet you are talking as if you’ve uncovered some major conspiracy. I was of the impression the Disaster:Day Of Crisis was cancelled ages ago along with Project HAMMER, so thanks for the update. Will the game be in black and white then? If not, what’s the big deal?
Basically, Nintendo are releasing edited screenshots of the game. The game actually looks like the colour ones. But Nintendo are releasing the screenshots in “black and white”. Not a technical error, because they released the files with the adjustment layer still as an editable file.
They could be taking the piss. Either that or the wrong set went out. Anything else makes no sense :(
