Around the area of the Eurogamer Expo the past 2 days were a curious trio of green-clad costumers, who you may have seen dancing around, or playing what is believed to be the first ever rendition of Street Pong. Quite frankly, it’d have been hard NOT to ask what on earth was going on.
This was promotion for Dare Protoplay – a public event being held at Spitalfields Market in London, where you can try out 17 entrants to the Dare to be Digital challenge, where independent developers, in teams of five, have 10 weeks to develop a unique game, and the results were extremely interesting… with games using a Guitar Hero controller in an RPG, a DDR mat in a situation of running forward and avoiding obstacles… and more.
Also taking place was a large storyboarding: to give people a very rough idea of the process of planning in a game, audience suggestions were taken up by artists to create some rather odd situations, some involving giant cheese sandwiches and Sarah Palin shooting up a church.
Makes no sense? Don’t worry, as we’ve got a special mini audio show as I talk to the people behind the event to try and figure out what on earth is happening – and you can download it as an mp3 or listen to it here on the site.

After catching an exhilarating match of Street Pong, Jonathan asks around to find out what’s going on, leading to the Dare Protoplay event with some curious unique titles and an even more unique storyboarding session.

Prince of Persia had a strong presence at Eurogamer’s Expo in London. With PS3 and 360 kiosks both at Ubisoft’s outside tent and on the show floor, as well as free T-shirts and Posters, you couldn’t avoid catching a glimpse of this beautiful, vivid adventure.
The new game in the series has quite a different feel than the Sands of Time trilogy, in just about every way imaginable. The well spoken Prince of Sands of Time, and his brooding, emo transformation in the latter two games, is replaced with an entirely new “Prince”; a wandering vagabond who gets wrapped up in a world saving adventure.
Voiced by Nolan North, the new Prince has an astounding resemblance to North’s previous character, Uncharted’s Nathan Drake. Nathan’s snide sarcasm and aversion to take things seriously are applied to the Prince in an uncanny likeness.
The pantheon of games on PS2, Xbox and Gamecube featured impressive and realistic graphics with an emphasis on fantasy and a slightly heightened palette. This time round, the world and the characters are plastered with thick primary hues, and outlined with graphic novel-esque strokes. Combined with fluid animations and massive backdrops, the game is nothing less than drop dead gorgeous.

Resident Evil 4 absolutely engulfed the action game market, despite its survival horror legacy and Japanese background. Receiving ubiquitously high scores from critics and remarkable sales, elements of Leon’s Granados killing adventure were seen in everything from 2006’s Gears of War to last week’s Dead Space.
Now, in a twisted turn of fate, Resident Evil 5 is the one taking influence. Relegating the fire and aim buttons to the controller’s shoulders and letting Chris strafe in the all new “Action Configuration”, Five takes one more step to shake its clunky, cumbersome past. If Resident Evil 6 lets you move while aiming, it might have to drop the Resident Evil moniker entirely.
The two levels on show had a lot in common; both were dilapidated shanty towns in Africa, and both were bright and sunny levels; a stark contrast to Resident Evil 4’s eternal-dusk setting. Another strong connection between the levels was their size and free roaming nature. Like the town at the very beginning of Resident Evil 4, both levels gave you a group of infected Africans (and a boss, wielding a giant hammer in one level, and a chainsaw in another) and let you run wild, jumping in and out of shacks, climbing up ladders and leading enemies past numerous explosive barrels.
No doubt the final game will feature its fair share of linear and more claustrophobic levels, which were seen later in the demo. Like the E3 presentation from producer Jun Takeuchi, Chris and partner Sheva split up to take a Zombie hoard from two different locations; Sheva in the thick of it and Chris providing cover from afar. Before we provided a boost for Sheva to jump between buildings, we opened up both inventories (by tapping the Right Bumper or R2 button) and swapped weapons, giving her our assault rifle and taking Sheva’s sniper rifle and ammo.
