Review – inFamous (Playstation 3)

inFamousA crumpled shadow of a city, Empire’s once prosperous metropolis is reduced to rubble and masonry; foundations poke out of crumbling buildings and power grids choke and splutter, to no avail. The city has dropped to its knees and its citizens hit self destruct – with no rules and no authority, shadowy gangs materialise to steal, pillage and kill.

Yet, while the explosion tore through the city with devastating force, bicycle messenger Cole MacGrath feels electricity surging through his body, allowing bolts of lightning to erupt out his hands and for feats of superhuman strength to be possible.

Cole fires out electricity in bursts and orbs, sprinkles the surrounding area with erratic sparks and crashes to the ground with an earth-shaking pulse, all while throbbing with his new effervescent blood. But while his powers are unpredictable and extraordinary, his urban-gymnastics are reserved and authentic. He scrambles up pipes and poles and leaps from sill to crevice with a satisfying stickiness, each movement deliberate and conscious.

His gymnasium is the city, a sandbox world that unlocks as the story progresses and resurges with electricity as Cole enters the sewers to recharge the city’s hearts. While the city’s power is off, Cole’s abilities are rendered near useless so a stealthy scamper across the rooftops gives an exhilarating view of the riots below. However, despite housing three suburbs, Empire City is painted with the same brush and decorated with the same stamps; outside of a few unique landmarks, each island struggles to have a distinctive identity.

inFamous works best when its two game mechanics, parkour and combat, complement and balance each other. You cling to a street lamp only to exert a shockwave that ricochets an incoming grenade. You grind across the power lines that drape between buildings, firing electrical blasts and narrowly leaping over a rocket. Alone, the mechanics are solid. Together, they are breathtaking. Later missions embrace the city’s verticality as colossal structures are scaled and aircraft circle the city, while enemies gather in groups and flank and flush you out with grenades, so complete command of your many powers is indispensable.

inFamous – Adventures in Empire City

inFamous

Empire City inFamous’ ravaged city is pulsating with carnage and despair; a band of neo-terrorists called the Reapers are pillaging the city, killing the innocents and draining this once prosperous metropolis of its power.

Enter Cole, buzzing with power and eager to use it, this human power socket can crush enemies with bolts of lightning, move giant obstacles with exhalations of power and repower the city with his own internal electricity. With a mixture of deadly power and graceful acrobatic ability, he will either save the city, or bring it to its knees.

Through preview builds and demos, here are some adventures we’ve experienced in Empire City so far.

inFamous

Crazy Train

To save a train station full of petrified citizens, Cole must use his powers to get a stubborn locomotive moving and usher it through the city. Every now and again the train will screech to a stop as the low voltage feeder box under the track loses juice and must be refilled with a few lightning bolts.

Along the track low level reapers hang out on rooftops and balconies, waiting for Cole with AK-47s and Rocket Launchers. It’s up to Cole to leap off the moving train, ascend the rooftops and take out his assailants. The power chords that string buildings together would be deadly impediments for the common folk of Empire, but Cole can grind down them like a surfer. Zig-zagging between buildings gives ample protection from gunfire, and a perfect vantage point for lightning bolts.

On this mission we see the versatility of Cole’s free-running abilities, allowing him to chain leaps and grabs in true acrobatic fashion. Poles, streetlamps, girders and pipes can be clung onto as Cole zips from street level to the rooftops, showing off a level of verticality that would make Crackdown proud. He’ll also leap from roof top to roof top, grabbing on to the side if he misses, or clenching tight on tiny window sills if the jump is really off. He can also ride the storm and get a slight airborne aid for the trickiest leaps.

Getting the train to its station and saving the people inside deals you bucket load of positive karma and a bunch of EXP to spend on new moves.
