Team Fortress 2 Updates Coming to 360

Demoman Valve’s marketing head honcho, Doug Lombardi confirmed to a Left 4 Dead playing Kotaku blogger that a bunch of Team Fortress 2 updates will be heading to the Xbox 360 version soon.

“The developer wanted to build up a massive update for Xbox 360 users before delivering. Given that Valve is being forced to charge for the update, they wanted to ensure that 360 owners were getting their money’s worth.”

Kotaku added that Valve is considering the $10 (800 Points) price point.

Xbox 360 players of Team Fortress 2 (which plays surprisingly well on the console) have missed out on game types such as Arena Mode and Payload, maps such as Badwater Basin, Badlands and Steel, and new weapons for Medic, Pyro and Heavy.

That’s one heck of a download!

TF2 Heavy – Meet the Sandvich

Sandvich

Valve has revealed the final addition to the Heavy’s new arsenal. Alongside the Killing Gloves of Boxing and Natasha, Heavy players can replace his Shotgun with a Sandvich.

The first unlockable weapon, the Sandvich (which is in unlimited supply) heals 120 health points. On the down side, not only will the Heavy be entirely vulnerable in the four seconds it takes for him to complete gorge upon the tasty treat.

The Sandvich is a great tool for a Heavy defending an area, as it gives him the ability to replenish health between enemy waves without having to abandon his post. Similarly, an offensive Heavy without a Medic can step back from the front line and grab a quick snack before resuming his rampage.

Beware, however: the Heavy must set aside his shotgun to take the Sandvich, and enemy Snipers are much more dangerous for a Heavy wielding only a minigun.

The update is accompanied by a special video. The complete Heavy update will go live… soon.

Team Fortress 2 – Arena Mode

null

In the penultimate announcement to Team Fortress 2’s Heavy Update, Valve has announced brand new mode; Arena.

Based on Team Deathmatch, Arena Mode is a no respawn fight to the death, featuring very short rounds when a team is eliminated. Arena Mode also features a central capture point that can end the game, when attained.

Rounds tend to be very fast and highly competitive, with an emphasis on your team’s class makeup and your plan to counter the opposing team’s class choices.

With the limited number of health pick-ups, Arena plays similar to sudden death in other TF2 modes, with Medics and health dispenser-building Engineers being vital.

TF2 Arena’s initial release will be playable on five maps; two brand new and three that are reworked and revisited for the fast paced, lethal blood sport that is Arena.

null null

Lumberyard

The first map to move from Team Fortress 2’s dusty desert backdrop, Lumberyard features an Alpine themed environment.

The map begins with an uneven traversal to the centre capture point; one half climbing towards a mountain peak and the other dipping into a valley.

When the capture point becomes active after 60 seconds, multiple entrances open up into the central control point, which becomes the focus of the fighting as the match nears its end.

Lumberyard is a Pyro’s dream as it has no water sources to aid burning victims, and Medics and Dispensers are imperative as the map’s single health pack sits on a thin log.

null null

Ravine

Back in the dusty desert, Ravine has four key choke points and emphasis on ground level combat. Ravine also features a series of canals for sneaky stealth assassinations and flanking manoeuvres.

Like all arena maps, the capture point in the middle becomes active after 60 seconds.

Badlands, Granary and Well

The middle capture point fighting area for each of these three existing maps has been extensively reworked and customized for TF2 Arena play.

The final Heavy Update, revealing Heavy Weapons Guy’s shotgun replacement, will be released late Tuesday.

Previous updates have included a Community Map “Steel”, the Killing Gloves of Boxing, Natasha and Badwater Basin.

Heavy Update – Natascha and Badwater Basin

Valve have revealed two new Team Fortress 2 additions as part of the “Heavy Update”, following the K.G.B and Community Map.

The Heavy will be able to swap Sasha, his mini-gun, for Natascha; a weapon that will dole out 25% less damage than its sister, but will always slow down its target upon impact.

The Heavy’s second unlockable, Natascha, slows enemies with her bullets. Anyone damaged by her will move slower for an instant, encouraging them to find cover or turn and face the Heavy, mano-a-tiny-itty-bitty-mano.

Unfortunately, Natascha is slightly weaker than Sasha, so she takes longer to finish off a victim. As a result, Natascha’s great against fleeing cowards, such as Scouts & Medics, and less great against anyone actively trying to kill her master. Heavies that like to jump around corners and surprise groups of startled enemy crybabies will also find her very useful, although they should look for a Sasha-wielding enemy Heavy before they leap.

Fans of Payload, a map about pushing a bomb through a canyon, will enjoy “Badwater Basin”. This new map has natural chokepoints and a heavy emphasis on vertical combat.

Unlike Gold Rush, where the track is split into three separate stages, Badwater Basin uses a single large stage with several checkpoints. As a result, the Blu team is highly encouraged to push the cart hard after beating their way through the Red defensive line.

Two new bits of information (including the Heavy’s shotgun replacement) will be revealed on Monday and Tuesday.

Heavy – KGB and Achievements

Valve has revealed the first new weapon that players will be able to unlock for Heavy Weapons Guy in the upcoming update for Team Fortress 2.

“The Killing Gloves of Boxing”, or K.G.B, give the Heavy five seconds of guaranteed critical hits after a successful kill. This crit-boost can be used to punch and kill further enemies, extending the boost time, or the Heavy can switch to another weapon and use the boost to take out an enemy at range.

The Heavy update pack will of course feature a number of achievements which will unlock the new weapons when they are earned. The pack contains achievements such as “Stalin the Kart”, “Marxman” and “Lenin a Hand”.

While the criteria for earning these achievements have been kept secret on the website, the image names do provide some clues. See a full list after the jump.

TF2 Daily Update – CP_Steel

Valve will be unveiling new Team Fortress 2 content every day, as they ramp up to the reveal of the new Heavy Weapons Guy update.

Tuesday’s update adds a new community map to the official map rotation. CP_Steel was created by Jamie “Fishbus” Manson.

A complex Attack/Defense control point map, with some unique gameplay. Unlike most TF2 maps, capturing a control point modifies the layout of the map, opening and closing routes for each team. As a result, the offensive team has a wide variety of tactical choices around how they’d like to assault the final point.

Should they use Scouts and Soldiers to rush the final point with only the routes they start with? Should they go for the side control points and open up more routes to the final? Should they capture extra points to shut down the defender’s routes? The many choices keep the map interesting for a long time, providing a wide variety of experiences in a game.

New Team Fortress 2 information will be unveiled soon.

TF2 Update Released

null

Valve has released the latest in the official updates to Team Fortress 2. Most important in the update is the inclusion of three brand new unlockable weapons and achievements for the Pyro, however these are not the only changes, as maps have been edited and bugs removed.

Pyro

  • Added alt-fire compression blast to the basic flamethrower
  • Added The Axtinguisher, The Backburner, and The Flare Gun
  • Hadouken taunt now kills people it hits
  • Tuned the flamethrower hit detection to improve detection versus retreating opponents
  • Removed Flamethrower’s damage falloff (was falling off to 25% by the end)

Team Fortress 2 – Meet the Sniper

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

The latest in Valve’s line of “Meet the” videos focuses on Team Fortress 2’s Cheeky Australian Marksman – The Sniper!

In his former life as a tracker of dangerous game in the unforgiving Australian outback, the Sniper would spend months by himself. Prolonged isolation taught him a valuable lesson: You don’t have to rely on other people if you never miss.

Just Medic, Spy and Pyro to go! A new pack of achievement-unlocked weapons for the Pyro will be available in Team Fortress 2 on Thursday.

Meet the Sniper and Pyro-Update Coming!

axt.jpg Valve has announced in a blog post that the next Team Fortress 2 characters to get some special treatment are the Sniper and Pyro.

Sniper, the Australian, machete wielding marksman, will be the star of his own vignette named, appropriately, “Meet the Sniper”. You can watch videos of his buddies Scout, Demoman and Heavy Weapons Guy at BGB.

Pyro will join the Medic as he receives a bunch of new weapons. These weapons are unlocked by collecting a certain number of in-game achievements and can be used to (optionally) replace your ordinary weapons from the menu.

Valve has revealed one such weapon; the Axtinguisher. This replacement for Pyro’s Axe does half damage in normal encounters, but is guaranteed critical hits when your opponent is on fire!

No release date has been set (heck, it’s Valve – they’d only move it back 6 months), but we’ll let you know.

Massive Team Fortress 2 Update Released

gold.jpg Valve has released the first proper content pack for Team Fortress 2, hoping to incrementally give new opportunities and strategies for each class.

These packs present a massive number of achievements for the class in question and completion of a certain number will reward the player with new weapons/items. These are alternatives for the class’ default arsenal and must be switched out to use; you can’t equip more than the default weapon number.

The first class to receive this treatment is the German Herr Doctor: Medic. Collecting 12 of the new achievements unlocks “The Blutsauger”, a new syringe that saps health from opponents you hit, but is denied critical hits as a compromise. When 24 are collected you will unlock “The Kritzkrieg”, a medigun where full Uber-charge results in constant critical hits, not invulnerability. Those hardcore to collect all 36 achievements will receive “The Ubersaw” which converts successful melee hits into Uber-charge!

For new and veteran Medics to unlock and try out their new updates, the content pack includes the new map, Gold Rush. The map is home to an attack and defend mode called Payload where the defending team must move a mine cart (by standing near it) all the way through the level, while the attacking team must stop it. Careful – the cart will move backwards if no one is standing next to it for 30 seconds.

While the Medic pack will make the game seem disjointed and possibly unbalanced at first, when the entire collection of class updates have rolled in it will make Team Fortress 2 into a whole new game; whether that’s for the better or for the determent, is up to the players.

Team Fortress 2 – Meet the Scout

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

The newest of Valve’s “Meet the” video set focuses on Team Fortress 2’s fastest, most agile and most annoying class – The Scout!

Whoever pointed out that The Scout is Vince from “Shamwow!” is a genius. And at $19.95, you can’t go wrong. I’m talking about Team Fortress 2’s weekend price drop, not a set of Shamwows! Bonk!

Just Medic, Sniper, Spy and Pyro to go! Also, the brand new map, Goldrush, and the Medic achievement pack will be available soon.

Team Fortress 2 – New Maps and Patch Today!

Valve has announced that the first large scale change to Team Fortress 2 will be unleashed to gamers tonight. The pack contains graphical updates and minor polishes to the entirety of TF2, as well as Source and Source TV.

You can read the full list at Steam News, but the important updates are listed below:

null

The new map, Badlands, is released – a remake of a memorable (probably) Team Fortress classic joint.

Dustbowl has been spruced up; the second map has often resulted in attack losing without a single capture – a new alternate route from spawn to CP means that you won’t get hit by sentries or demoman spam (spamoman, demospam).

The recently released Well update, Capture the Flag Well, now has more efficient trains than Virgin Railways and some bug fixes. Granary is also fixed up and patched to avoid some annoying glitches and issues.

The sniper’s critical hit has been nerfed, the Pyro’s flame thrower will make a different sound upon impact and the map’s remaining time will show on your HUD!

null

It’s hardly the biggest update, and the Medic Achievement Pack, new unlockable weapons and new mode/map “Goldrush” are nowhere to be seen, but it should help idle Team Fortress 2 fans (like myself) get back into the fray!

No word yet if the PS3 or 360 editions of the Orange Box will get this update, so PC gamers use this chance to gloat your heads off.

Garry’s Mod – Now Orange Box Compatible

A few days ago (January 15th, to be exact), Garry’s Mod, the popular sandbox editor for the Half Life engine, was updated to include models, NPCs and other good stuff from The Orange Box.

This amazingly creative and addictive playground can now be used to send a balloon-hoisted bathtub to the sky with G-Man, a Counterstrike Scientist, a Day of Defeat Soldier, an Antlion Grub, Heavy Weapons Guy and the Weighted Companion Cube as the crew.

If you have Garry’s Mod (10, that is), Steam will automatically update to the latest version.

If you don’t have Garry’s Mod – why the heck not? It’s the perfect companion (cube) to any of the Source games that let you run it (full list here). With the poor dollar rate, Garry’s Mod 10 can be available to you for about £5, directly from Steam.

Valve rolls out Team Fortress 2 Patch-a-thon

Valve has rolled out a bunch of new updates and fixes to Team Fortress 2 on PC. No need to worry about patches and what not, Steam will automatically update the title before you play.

You can read all 34 points over at Steam’s website, but I’ll list the most important below.

null

Sudden Death mode is now a server option and defaults to OFF
This no-respawn brawl that happens at the end of stalemate matches will have to be turned on by the server if they want to include it. I implore server admins to think of creative and super fun mods on the theme, such as all Heavies, only allowed to punch each other.

The Medic’s Medigun now charges at an increased rate during Setup time, to remove the need for self-damage grinding
If you’ve ever been waiting for the gates to open and wonder why a soldier is blasting away at the floor, he’s not bored and he’s not insane; he’s helping medics build up a uber charge for when the gate opens. No need anymore, Medic uber charges are greatly increased when the gates are shut.

Added effects to players when they earn an achievement, visible to other players nearby
You now see a little trophy above their head, and the name of the achievement down in the message box!

Fixed gaps in stage gates that allowed snipers to kill defenders during setup
In two of the three Dustbowl maps, snipers could poke their little gun between cracks in the wall and pick off exposed defenders. These gaps have now been closed off with polygons and cement.

null

The patch isn’t perfect with players still being able to go underground near Gravel Pit’s C point or put a teleporter exit in a tiny gap behind a fence on Dustbowl Map 1. If people can annoy others when playing a game, they’ll do it and they won’t stop looking until they find a way. Nevertheless, some good updates to a frighteningly addictive game.

Review – Team Fortress 2

null

The original Team Fortress was released in 1996 as a Quake mod. The sequel, Team Fortress 2, has been in the making since 1998, and in that long period has made the giant leap from being another realistic-looking Quake mod to a Source-powered title with the visual style more reminiscent of a Pixar movie or J.C. Leyendecker drawing. So, with nine years of work under its belt, Team Fortress 2 has almost as much hype to live up to as Duke Nukem Forever, and as sure as you can always bet on Duke, you can bet that Team Fortress 2 does not disappoint.
